"Заповести светих отаца" ("The Commandments of the Holy Fathers") from the Trebnik of the Monastery Zographou Library (Manuscript No 50)
An unknown Old Slavonic penitential under the title “Zapovesti svetih otaca” (“The Commandments of the Holy Fathers”) is presented in this study. It was copied in the Trebnik (Prayer Book) of the Monastery Zographou Library (sig. No. 50) dated to the late 13th or the early 14th century. The penitential is preserved as one-page fragment with a title and five canons, which are published as an appendix to this study. The canons are copied from an Old Slavonic translation of the Synagogue of 50 Titles of John Scholastikos, known as the Nomokanon of Methodios. The importance of the Zographou penitential is that it is contemporary to the oldest surviving copy of the Nomokanon in the Ustyuzhskaya Kormchaya. This is the oldest known penitential written in the Serbian recension of the Old Church Slavonic language. The penitential contains the Apostolic 63, 42, 54, 45 canons and the Laodicea 20 canon, all dealing with clerical issues. The canons are adjusted to the form of penitential literature..., since the last of them introduces the penalty of 100 prostrations. One of the main issues of this research the examination of the textual relation between these legal compendia in the context of the dissemination of the Nomokanon of Methodios in South-Slavic lands. Therefore, the structure and the origin of rules and proscriptions of several South-Slavic penitential compendia from manuscripts dating from the first half of the 14th-century are taken into account. It is also shown that an attempt to reconstruct the lost part of the Zographou text according to a Bulgarian penitential of the same title, containing the Methodios’
canons, from a late 14th century manuscript (sig. Q. II. 90) held by the Russian National Library in Sankt-Petersburg, would be fruitless.
