AB - In the paper we will introduce the results of several recent archaeological surveys in the area of Novi Kneževac, Čoka and Kikinda municipalities on the north Banat side of Tisza and Kanjiža and Senta municipalities on the Bačka side of the River. The north Bačka region of Serbia is physically divided by the waters of the Tisza River from the north Banat region, but both were greatly influenced by its everchanging course throughout (pre)history. The surveys have yielded new information about the middle and late Neolithic in the north of Serbia, but have also brought to light numerous interesting facts.

The earliest evidence of human habitation in the area date to Körös-Starčevo period of the middle Neolithic with multiple sites of various sizes discovered on both sides of the River. Surface collection indicates that these sites are mostly short time, single period settlements, without prominent vertical stratigraphies or tell like formations. While the north Banat area on the left bank of Tisza was continuously occupied and transformed unhindered from middle to late Neolithic traditions with several multi-layered telloid sites attested in the period, having Körös-Starčevo, Sakalhat and early Vinča presence, on the opposite bank, in the north Bačka area, the late Neolithic period remains elusive. In the paper, we will analyse and compare several aspects of the living environment, the landscape and subsistence strategies to compare two neighbouring regions and attempt to isolate and identify factors that may have influenced the absence of the late Neolithic in the area of Serbian north Bačka.

AB - Abstract: The strategic position of the region of Central Balkans between East and
West of the Roman Empire and its well known wealth in mineral sources (ores), gave
the most favorable preconditions for the construction and establishment of the large
scale of Roman terrestrial and fluvial communication lines of the different character
and chronology as well, as for the particular urbanization system. Some recent developments
concerning the scientific research in this territory tend to broaden our
previous knowledge and to revise the persisting conclusions.

AB - This book is a monograph on Drobeta, the most important Roman
town on the Danubian limes in the region of the Iron Gates (Đerdap).
Situated on the left bank of the Danube, on the same location as the
modern-day Romanian town of Drobeta Turnu Severin, in Roman times
Drobeta was on the border of two provinces: Dacia and Moesia Superior.
This tome is divided into two distinct sections – the historical part, and a
corpus of inscriptions which form the main basis for the former section.
The epigraphic catalogue numbers 119 inscriptions arranged by find finding
place, and further subdivided by several other categories: epigraphic
monuments discovered in Drobeta 1–75; monuments from within the territory
of the town 76–84; monuments uncovered on the right bank of the
Danube, mentioning dignitaries from Drobeta (85–89); inscriptions ad
res pertinentes discovered outside the town limits (90–92) or outside the
province (93–97); also included in this volume are small fragments from
Drobeta (98–117). Epigraphic research was executed in 2006 and 2007,
which included autopsy of a significant number of the monuments treated
here.

Some Considerations about the Peregrine Communities in Upper Moesia

AB - Abstract: The present paper offers an outline of important evidence about the
territories and the administration of the peregrine communities in Upper
Moesia. The study of this type of communities can contribute to better
understanding of the administrative history of this Roman province and
help set the framework for the further research on this topic; this is especially
important for the province of Upper Moesia since our knowledge of its
ancient past is quite fragmentary.
demografske prilike u njoj.
pitanjima i pretresaju najvažniji dosad izneti stavovi o njima.

settlements along the limes in Upper Moesia. Aquae (Prahovo) had a favorable strategic position near the
mouth of the Timok River that flowed into the Danube and a peculiar character in the military and civil

importance in connection with the conquest of Dacia and commercial significance in relation to mining

Natural environment and resources, and the long life of the Neolithic settlement at Vinča, southeast Europe

AB - The Neolithic settlement in Vinča near Belgrade, Serbia, was occupied for more than a millennium (c. 5600–4500 cal BC); from about 5200 cal BC the occupation, associated with the regional Vinča culture phenomenon, was uninterrupted. After gradual horizontal expansion in the beginning, the Vinča culture settlement grew vertically. A number of successive occupation levels composed of large, dense agglomerations of buildings formed an artificial mound of more than 10 ha in extent. The long and continuous life in a fixed location was likely facilitated by favourable natural environment offering a range of subsistence options and pathways. This paper reviews previous, and presents more recent, archaeological (i.e. artefactual) and palaeoenvironmental (geological, hydrological, palaeobotanical, faunal) evidence for the Vinča site and uses it to identify natural resources available in
the settlement’s surroundings as well as those found in more distant areas. Using the on-and off-site data, it indirectly evaluates economic potential of the different environmental zones around Neolithic Vinča. The impression is that the resources available locally were remarkably diverse, offered a wide spectrum of food and raw materials, and were exploitable throughout the duration of the settlement. In addition to the apparently marked profusion and variety of opportunities in the vicinity of the site, the subsistence behaviour and the nature of landscape use were likely such that they did not have a great impact on the natural environment.

The Neolithic settlement in Vinča near Belgrade, Serbia, was occupied for more than a millennium (c.
In addition to the apparently marked profusion and variety of opportunities in the vicinity of the site, the subsistence behaviour and the nature of landscape use were likely such that they did not have a great impact on the natural environment.",

AB - Archaeoacoustics is a multidisciplinary field of research focused on the history
of the relatedness of the field of sound and architecture. The architectural history
of Europe, from Antiquity to the modern period, is abundant in the findings of
vessels, which are considered to have an acoustic purpose. This paper addresses
these acoustic vessels embedded in the massive walls of sacred architecture
in medieval Serbia (15 churches). We considered the wide context of current
archaeoacoustic research, in order to argue that this practice can be regarded as
an expression of a certain medieval musical tradition.
судовa.

AB - Predictive modeling of the existence of archaeological sites is based on mathematical or moreprecisely statistical prediction of the location of an unknown archaeological site based on thepreviously selected parameters of the already known and established sites in the area of interest. The subject of the theoretical and methodological research in the widest sense are the settlementpatterns of different geographic regions inhabited by the members of the Vinča culture duringthe late Neolithic period. Using predictive modeling, which in itself is the expression ofprobability of occurrence/existence of sites I will try to establish conscientious patterns inchoosing site locations for settlement locations in regard to the various factors, fromenvironmental to social, and perhaps even individual. The selection of the locations to beanalyzed depends on their physical and geographical characteristics in an attempt to show thedifference in environmental factors amongst regions in order to establish whether a prehistoricsociety such as Vinča culture was equally aware of various impacts possible in choosing certainregions for settling. The subject of the empirical research is the relationship of the late Neolithic settlements with thesurrounding environment, but also the possible social factor influencing the process of choosingthe settlement location. The creation of a predictive model attempts to model a specific, verifiable implication of an archaeological theory, i.e. the impact of human behavior (activityand practice) on the accumulation of material data over a regional scale. The culture – historical domain of the archaeological research in this dissertation is Vinčaculture, whilst the spatial domain lies within the boundaries of central Serbia, Kosovo,Vojvodina, the Romanian regions of Banat, Oltenia and Transilvania, eastern Bosnia, northernMontenegro and Macedonia. However, within the dissertation, only two regions, the area of eastBanat centered between the towns of Vršac and Bela Crkva and the area of Leskovac valleywith the city of Leskovac in the center are being analyzed. Chronologically, this dissertationanalyzes the period of Vinča culture, dated between 5300 and 4600 cal. BC.

Predictive modeling of the existence of archaeological sites is based on mathematical or moreprecisely statistical prediction of the location of an unknown archaeological site based on thepreviously selected parameters of the already known and established sites in the area of interest. BC.",

AB - The focus of the paper is on the travel scene depicted on the funerary stele of L. Blassius Nigellio (CIL III 1650), a speculator of legio VII Claudia, from Viminacium. Seeking to gain a more comprehensive understanding of this scene from the everyday professional life of a Roman speculator, it draws attention to an iconographic pattern shared by a group of monuments of Roman principales (speculatores, frumentarii, beneficiarii consularis) among which the scene from Viminacium holds a very important place. It also takes a look at the origin and social status of the Upper Moesian speculator who could afford such a costly tombstone.

AB - The bronze signum discussed in this paper was discovered by archaeological excavation on the site of Timacum Maius in 2010. Found in the area of a luxurious Roman-period building, the artefact shows a tapering body with a central conical socket similar to a spearhead socket. It is one of the twenty-three known signa of the so-called classical-type. Most of them were found in the context of the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus, and we also presume the cultic purpose of the bronze signum from Timacum Maius. A similar find comes from Jupiter Dolichenus’ shrine in Egeta on the Danube limes with an inscription that connects it directly with the Dolichenian cult, and with the First Cohort of Cretans (Cohors I Cretum), the unit which had previously been stationed at Timacus Maius. The signum from Timacum Maius is most likely also connected with the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus and chronologically belongs to a period which is much earlier than the Severan age.

AB - Focusing on the area of Danubian provinces of Roman Empire, this paper aims at touching upon linguistic diversity and language change in north-western Balkans in Roman epoch. Using epigraphic evidence, it will address the questions of the impact of the spread of Greek and Latin in this area, which led to a gradual extinction of the native, Palaeo-Balkan languages. In Antiquity, linguistic situation in this area was extremely complex: a great variety of languages came into close mutual contact and in contact with Greek and Latin, which became dominant. These Palaeo-Balkan languages are relict languages, and they are known almost exclusively through the onomastics recorded in Latin and Greek inscriptions and through rare glosses, i.e. by the time they came to be documented, their speakers were already Romanized or Hellenized. Most of the documents that record native onomastics are at the same time testaments of Romanization/Hellenization; however, these inscriptions bear witness that the native population preserved the memory of their ethnic and linguistic background.

AB - The cult of Jupiter Dolichenus, of Oriental origin, is evident throughout almost all the territory
of the Roman Empire. The followers of the Dolichenus theology, such as soldiers, priests,
tradesmen, miners and freedmen dedicated figurative representations as well as numerous
inscriptions to the glory of the deity. In the territory of Upper Moesia, a particular frequency
of dedications is noticed along the Danube border region/limes. In this study I shall deal with
a somewhat particular type of Dolichenus believers, namely those who had a direct or indirect
connection with the mining areas of Upper Moesia.

Crops and Wild Plants from Early Iron Age Kalakača, Northern Serbia: Comparing Old and New Archaeobotanical Data

AB - The “old” archaeobotanical analysis of charred plant remains hand-picked in the 1970’s from several pit-features at Early Iron Age Kalakača in Vojvodina, northern Serbia was conducted by Willem van Zeist and published by Predrag Medović. This work provided first information on the archaeobotany of the site and the plant material deposited in the semi- or fully-subterranean structures whose function has remained more-or-less enigmatic. These features were in the past filled with a mass of fragments of, primarily, large ceramic vessels, chunks of (burnt) daub, large quantities of animal bone, and burnt plant matter. The “new” archaeobotanical work at Kalakača included sampling and flotation in the field, and subsequent analysis of a fraction of the samples. The paper explores the composition of the two datasets from Kalakača, separately and combined; it identifies the spectra of crop and wild plants and discusses the quantitative representation of the crops. The paper concludes by broadly comparing the integrated crop record from this site with the crop datasets from few other Early Iron Age sites in Serbia in order to get a preliminary picture on the choice of cultivated crops and possible preferences for certain crop types.

The members of these associations were united by a common background and
often by professional interests, and gathered around an ancestral cult.
