AB - The paper explores epigraphic evidence that shed light on the Roman defence strategy in the region of the Iron Gates from first to third centuries CE—from the early military presence of Romans in this region and the establishment of the Roman limes on the Danube until its refortification after the abandonment of Dacia and the establishment of DaciaRipensis. The complex relationship between the two banks of the Danube, the question of provincial borders and the command of the units stationed in the fortifications in the gorge will be examined based on the inscriptions.

TY - BOOK
AU - Николић, Драгана
PY - 2019
UR - https://dais.sanu.ac.rs/123456789/12743
AB - This book is a monograph on Drobeta, the most important Roman
town on the Danubian limes in the region of the Iron Gates (Đerdap).
Situated on the left bank of the Danube, on the same location as the
modern-day Romanian town of Drobeta Turnu Severin, in Roman times
Drobeta was on the border of two provinces: Dacia and Moesia Superior.
This tome is divided into two distinct sections – the historical part, and a
corpus of inscriptions which form the main basis for the former section.
The epigraphic catalogue numbers 119 inscriptions arranged by find finding
place, and further subdivided by several other categories: epigraphic
monuments discovered in Drobeta 1–75; monuments from within the territory
of the town 76–84; monuments uncovered on the right bank of the
Danube, mentioning dignitaries from Drobeta (85–89); inscriptions ad
res pertinentes discovered outside the town limits (90–92) or outside the
province (93–97); also included in this volume are small fragments from
Drobeta (98–117). Epigraphic research was executed in 2006 and 2007,
which included autopsy of a significant number of the monuments treated
here.

Some Considerations about the Peregrine Communities in Upper Moesia

AB - Abstract: The present paper offers an outline of important evidence about the
territories and the administration of the peregrine communities in Upper
Moesia. The study of this type of communities can contribute to better
understanding of the administrative history of this Roman province and
help set the framework for the further research on this topic; this is especially
important for the province of Upper Moesia since our knowledge of its
ancient past is quite fragmentary.
demografske prilike u njoj.
pitanjima i pretresaju najvažniji dosad izneti stavovi o njima.

AB - The project EpiDoc XML Encoding of Roman Inscriptions from Serbia: Digitization of Ancient Epigraphic Heritage carried out by the Institute for Balkan Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and funded by the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia focuses on research, training, digital documenting and digital edition of Roman inscriptions from the territory of Serbia (the Roman province of Upper Moesia and parts of Lower Pannonia, Dalmatia and Thrace). The project’s primary aim is to form a national e-archive of inscriptions that will be encoded in EpiDoc TEI-XML format. This collection of digital corpora will represent a completely new epigraphic edition that is furthermore born-digital and ready for interchange. The project is envisioned as a core for networking and intensifying the collaboration between research and cultural institutions. Its mission is to educate, inspire and instigate collaborative work and
new concepts in epigraphic research.

Greek, Latin and Palaeo-Balkan Languages in Contact

AB - Focusing on the area of Danubian provinces of Roman Empire, this paper aims at touching upon linguistic diversity and language change in north-western Balkans in Roman epoch. Using epigraphic evidence, it will address the questions of the impact of the spread of Greek and Latin in this area, which led to a gradual extinction of the native, Palaeo-Balkan languages. In Antiquity, linguistic situation in this area was extremely complex: a great variety of languages came into close mutual contact and in contact with Greek and Latin, which became dominant. These Palaeo-Balkan languages are relict languages, and they are known almost exclusively through the onomastics recorded in Latin and Greek inscriptions and through rare glosses, i.e. by the time they came to be documented, their speakers were already Romanized or Hellenized. Most of the documents that record native onomastics are at the same time testaments of Romanization/Hellenization; however, these inscriptions bear witness that the native population preserved the memory of their ethnic and linguistic background.

AB - The article aims at exploring the epigraphic evidence for socialreligious
associations of foreigners in the Roman province of Upper Moesia.

AB - The paper looks at some aspects of the Thracian Hero cult on the Danube frontier of Upper Moesia inspired by a reinterpretation of a Latin votive inscription from Diana, which, as the paper proposes, was dedicated to Deo Totovitioni. Based on epigraphic analogies, the paper puts forth the view that it was a dedication to the Thracian Hero, since it is in the context of this particular cult that the epithet Totovitio has been attested in various variants (Toto-viti- / Toto-bisi- / Toto-ithi-).

О antroponimiji Azala

severu Panonije i u rimsko doba činilo veću peregrinu zajednicu u toj rimskoj
provinciji.
AB - In the present paper the author deals with native personal names of the tribe of
the Azali who lived in northern Pannonia, where they were organized into a
large civitas peregrina in Roman times. Based on the anthroponymy, it is usually
considered that the Azali were of Pannonian (“Illyrian”) origin, and that the tribe,
positioned between the Celtic tribes of Boii and Eravisci, represented a “south
Pannonian linguistic island in northern Pannonia”. It has also been suggested
that they were resettled from southern Pannonia to the north by Tiberius.
However, the onomastic evidence indicates that this thesis needs revision. The
author tries to examine the epigraphically attested personal names of the Azali,
dividing them into two cathegories: 1. non-Latin personal names recorded in
Latin inscriptions, in which the Azalian origin is expressed (29); 2. non-Latin
personal names attested in the inscriptions from the territory of the civitas
peregrina (38). The analysis of the onomastics inventory shows that a significant
number of records appear to be Celtic.

UR - https://dais.sanu.ac.rs/123456789/3917
AB - The article offers a reinterpretation of a recently published inscription of a medicus found at
Naissus in 1984. The altar is set up for the health of the emperor Septimius Severus and his sons,
Caracalla and Geta which may be dated to AD 202 (cf. inscriptions from Remesiana IMS III/2, 69–
71). The text of the epigraph reads as follows: Pro salutem (!) d(omini) ┌n┐(ostri)| L(uci) Septimi
Severi Pii | Pertinacis Aug(usti) et | Imp(eratoris) M(arci) Aur(elii) Antonin(i) | [[P(ubli) Sept(imi)
Getae Caes(aris)]] <<Pii Aug(usti) et Iul(iae) | Dom(nae) Aug(ustae) m(atri) c(astrorum)>> ||
Claudius Magnus medi(cus) || Ascle|pio || Hygia. It may be supposed that the physician from Naissus,
Claudius Magnus, was attached to the cohors I Dardanorum, garrisoned there from the time of
Marcus (the unit was raised in AD 169 cf. Dušanić 1978; attestations in Naissus: IMS IV 32 and 94;
P. Petrović, IMS IV, p. 31). It has a very close analogy in the funerary inscription (IMS III/2, 49) of
a medicus cohortis II Dardanorum from Ravna (Timacum Minus) and another, from Kosmaj (IMS I
116), mentioning a valetudinarium of the cohors I Aurelia nova miliaria equitata.

The article offers a reinterpretation of a recently published inscription of a medicus found at
Naissus in 1984.
Getae Caes(aris)]] <<Pii Aug(usti) et Iul(iae) | Dom(nae) Aug(ustae) m(atri) c(astrorum)>> ||
Claudius Magnus medi(cus) || Ascle|pio || Hygia. It may be supposed that the physician from Naissus,
Claudius Magnus, was attached to the cohors I Dardanorum, garrisoned there from the time of
Marcus (the unit was raised in AD 169 cf. Dušanić 1978; attestations in Naissus: IMS IV 32 and 94;
P. Petrović, IMS IV, p. 31). It has a very close analogy in the funerary inscription (IMS III/2, 49) of
a medicus cohortis II Dardanorum from Ravna (Timacum Minus) and another, from Kosmaj (IMS I
116), mentioning a valetudinarium of the cohors I Aurelia nova miliaria equitata.",
