AB - While the effects of chronic exposure to microplastic particles (MPs) are extensively studied, the outcomes of a single treatment have received relatively less attention. To investigate MPs’ potential acute toxicity, including their impact on general health status (victual consumption, sensorimotor deficits, and clinical toxicity signs) and serum biochemical parameters (markers of organ/tissue function and oxidative stress indicators), we administered thoroughly characterized MPs (1.4, 35, or 125 mg/kg), generated from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, to adult male Wistar rats via oral gavage. The MPs’ short-term effects were assessed with well-established tests and methods. The results point to the absence of sensorimotor deficits and clinical toxicity signs, while levels of markers of liver, heart, and kidney function were altered in all MP groups. Decreased victual consumption and increased levels of oxidative stress indicators were evident following treatment with the two higher MP doses. Presented data indicate that examined MPs are able to initiate the development of local changes in tissues and organs within a short time frame, potentially leading to their damage and dysfunction. This study may increase the awareness of the detrimental effects of plastic contamination, as even a single exposure to MPs may provoke adverse health outcomes.

AB - Recently we have developed polymer/ceramic composite coatings based on poly(vinyl butyral), hydroxyapatite and zinc oxide-based nanostructured powders (PVB, HAP:Co and ZnO:Co, respectively). Prepared composite coatings showed good both adhesions to metal and glass surfaces and camouflage properties, thus can be used to improve combat capability of military equipment. An essential demand of new materials in the military industry is to be multifunctional.
Accordingly, the aim of this study was to examine corrosion activity of the PVB/ZnO:Co and PVB/HAP:Co coatings in saline solution as a function of immersion time. The ZnO:Co and HAP:Co nanostructured powders were synthesized by hydrothermal processing of a precipitate. To adjust optical properties, synthesized powders were annealed at 400, 800 and 1000 °C. Annealed powders were mixed with PVB: each powder was dispersed in ethanol with the aid of an ultrasonic probe, successively PVB powder was added in dispersion, in 10 wt.% regard to ethanol, and stirred on a mechanical stirrer to completely dissolve. Prepared solution was coated on stainless steel substrate and dried at room temperature for 72 hours to form solid coating. The corrosion activity of the coatings was measured by potentiodynamic polarization technique in the potential range from -0.8 to -0.2 V vs SCE, with the scan rate of 10mVs-1. The measurements were performed using a conventional three-electrode cell in 3% NaCl water solution as the electrolyte. Platinum foil, a standard calomel electrode (SCE) and coated stainless steel were used as the counter, reference and working electrode, respectively. We found that all examined coatings have lower corrosion activity than bare stainless steel or stainless steel coated with pure PVB. Differences in corrosion activity between the coatings are explained by different textural and optoelectronic properties of ceramic powders modified by the annealing procedure.

These models are used for various tasks in field of natural language processing, such as text classification, question answering and language translation. In this talk, research methodology, practical aspects and performance testing of fine – tuned LLMs, both commercial and open source in domain of materials synthesis, will be covered. So far, LLMs seems to have promising future in education, research and production only integrated with other chemistry tools, thus further development of integrated AI systems as well as LLMs is necessary to enhance performances and meet future demands.

AB - Nanotechnology, as a most promising approach in material science, has resulted in numerous enhancements and breakthroughs in diverse scientific fields. One of the examples is selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) which emerged as a new form with some improved properties compared to other Se forms. Among these properties, anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidative, and reduced toxicity are the most interesting from the aspect of biomedical applications. Due to simplicity, short duration, scalability, and reproducibility, chemical reduction is a synthesis technique very often applied in SeNPs production. The choice of reducing agents, their molar ratio with a precursor, and the choice of stabilizing agents are recognized as determining parameters for the application efficiency of designed SeNPs.
This presentation includes an overview of the results of SeNPs obtained by the reduction of sodium selenite and stabilized with different agents. Furthermore, the effects of synthesis parameters on the properties of obtained particles (size, morphology, crystallinity, stability, surface chemistry) and biological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidative, and cytotoxicity will be elaborate. In addition, some potential applications of SeNPs will be discussed, with particular reference to the results of in vivo experiments.

AB - Zaleplon, a member of Z-drugs, is a pyrazolopyrimidine hypnotic with sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant properties. Zaleplon is approved for the short-term management of insomnia since acting as positive γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor allosteric modulator increases efficacy of inhibition on brain excitability. Importantly, for the proper functioning of the brain a balance between inhibitory (i.e., GABAergic) and excitatory (i.e., glutamatergic) system must be accomplished. This may be fulfilled by control of presynaptic elements (synthesis or degradation of glutamate and GABA neurotransmitters, their compartmentation, releasing and recycling) and regulation of expression and function of glutamate and GABA receptors. Hence, we aimed to investigate effects of prolonged zaleplon treatment on the expression of proteins involved in the gabaergic and glutamatergic signalization in the hippocampus of adult male Wistar rats. Five-day intraperitoneal administration increased level of components of GABAergic signalization (glutamate decarboxylase 67-GAD67, vesicular GABA transporter-VGAT and α1 subunit of GABA receptor-GABAAα1). This was accompanied by increased level of glutamatergic components (vesicular glutamate transporter 1-vGlut1 and subunits of glutamate N-Methyl-d-aspartate receptor-NMDAR, namely NR1, NR2A, NR2B), which clearly indicate maintenance of balance between main inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters. Given the importance of equilibrium of these systems for neuronal excitability, synaptic plasticity and cognitive functions, as well as its involvement in the mood, feeding behavior, reproductive functions, pain sensitivity, aging, etc., the current and prospective pharmaceuticals increasingly rely on GABA/glutamate balance

AB - Cerebral hypoperfusion (CH) is recognised as a contributor to various impairments characteristic for elderly population and patients with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. CH-induced brain damage is linked with oxidative stress in the cells that can cause DNA fragmentation and cell death, reflected through a change in cells’ morphology. Our study investigated the beneficial effects of progesterone (P4), a hormone with neuroprotective properties, against CH-induced oxidative stress and neurodegenerative pathologies in rat prefrontal cortex (PFC). For the purpose of the experiment, adult male Wistar rats were dived into groups: (I) animals subjected to permanent bilateral occlusion of common carotid arteries (2VO) treated with vehicle (commercial flax oil, 1 mg/kg/day), (II) animals subjected to 2VO treated with P4 dissolved in vehicle (1.7 mg/kg/day) and (III) animals subjected to sham operation treated with vehicle. Animals were sacrificed after 7 subcutaneous treatments. Levels of pro-/antioxidant balance (PAB) and DNA fragmentation along with cell morphology were estimated by well-defined methods. The results revealed that P4 administration moderated CH-induced impairments in PFC, not only by decreasing PAB level and diminishing DNA fragmentation, but also preserving the cell morphology reflected through clearly defined cell bodies, with round nuclei, prominent nucleolus and visible Nissl bodies in layer III. Obtained results point out that P4 is able to attenuate CH-induced pro-oxidant state and subsequent changes in PFC. This hormone holds promise as an effective agent for the CH treatment, still, its specific actions remain to be discovered.

AB - Dense calcium phosphate-based ceramics were fabricated to be used as targets for pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Nanostructured cobalt-substituted hydroxyapatite (Co:HAP) was used as a starting powder. To vary phase composition and microstructure of targets, two sintering approaches were applied, conventional (CS) and two-step sintering (TSS). The obtained results show that in both cases biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramics (targets) were prepared, with slightly different HAP-to-β–TCP amount ratio and a significantly different microstructure. While the CS method yielded fully dense ceramics with an average grain size of 1.3 μm, the ceramics prepared by TSS had a density of 98.5%, with a predominant grain size below 100 nm. (Ca + Co)P coatings were prepared by PLD of (Ca + Co)P targets. The temperature of the Ti substrate was adjusted to be 25 and 500 °C. The results show that the phase composition of (Ca + Co)P coatings depended on the phase composition of targets as well as on the temperature of the Ti substrate. The coating prepared at 25 °C using CS target consisted of three calcium phosphate phases, HAP, β–TCP and α–TCP; when the TSS target was used, the coating was biphasic, containing HAP and β–TCP. When the substrate was heated to 500 °C, regardless of whether the CS or the TSS target was used, the deposited coatings were composed of HAP and α–TCP. Due to different phase compositions, the (Ca + Co)P coatings deposited at 25 °C showed an improved hardness compared to those deposited at 500 °C. The obtained results confirmed that the phase composition, morphology and mechanical properties of 0.3 μm thick (Ca + Co)P coatings on a Ti substrate can be tailored by employing (Ca + Co)P targets with different microstructures, and also by varying the temperature of the Ti substrate during deposition experiments.

AB - Introduction: Cerebral hypoperfusion (CH), a reduced cerebral blood flow, characteristic for aging and neurodegenerative disorders, might be associated with a pro-oxidative state in the brain due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause neuronal damage. These overgenerated pro-oxidants might be reduced, disabled and neutralized by the endogenous antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). A sex steroid hormone, progesterone, in several experimental models of neuronal injury exerts anti-oxidative properties upregulating anti-oxidative molecules and thus promoting neuroprotection. However, its efficacy in the state of CH is still unknown and it is necessary to better understand the mechanism underlying this hormone’s neuroprotective effects.
Aim: We investigated whether progesterone is able to modulate CH-induced pro-oxidative/anti-oxidative imbalance, as well as SOD and CAT activities, in the prefrontal cortex of three-month-old male Wistar rats subjected to permanent bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (2VO).
Methods: The appropriate actions were undertaken to reduce the distress of the animals in agreement with the European Community Council Directive of 86/609/EEC and 010/63/EU for animal experiments. All experimental procedures were allowed by the Ethical Committee for the Use of Laboratory Animals of VINČA Institute of Nuclear Sciences - National Institute of thе Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Republic of Serbia (protocol authorization numbers 02/11 and 323-07-04253/2016-05). Following chloral hydrate anaesthesia, 8 rats randomly assigned in 2VO groups were double occluded with 5–0 silk suture, while 4 animals from sham operated group were subjected to the same surgical procedure but without actual ligation of carotid arteries. Four hours following the surgical procedure animals from sham operated group, used as controls, were subcutaneously treated with vehicle (commercial flax oil, 1 mg/kg/day, S + V), while animals in 2VO groups were subjected to either progesterone (1.7 mg/kg/day, 2VO + P) or vehicle (commercial flax oil, 1 mg/kg/day, 2VO + V). Following 7 days lasting treatments, pro-oxidative/anti-oxidative balance was assessed according to the method of Alamdari et al. [1]; while activities of anti-oxidative enzymes were determined as described in the study by Tatalović et al. [2]. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test followed by Tukey’s post hoc test was employed to analyse data. The values of p < 0.05 or less were considered statistically significant.
Results: Obtained results demonstrate that compared to controls, 2VO and vehicle treatment induced a significant increase of pro-oxidants levels (p < 0.01) as well as the activities of both investigated anti-oxidative enzymes, although only the CAT activity was significantly increased (p < 0.05). Following progesterone treatment, pro-oxidants levels were lowered to the control level which caused the difference between the 2VO groups (p < 0.05). In parallel, no statistically significant change in SOD activity was observed, while CAT was upregulated (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Presented results suggest that in the prefrontal cortex in the state of CH, progesterone, by modulating the CAT activity, downregulates overgenerated reactive species, reduces CH-induced oxidative stress and exerts anti-oxidative outcomes.

Conclusion: Presented results suggest that in the prefrontal cortex in the state of CH, progesterone, by modulating the CAT activity, downregulates overgenerated reactive species, reduces CH-induced oxidative stress and exerts anti-oxidative outcomes.",

AB - Introduction: As a result of human activity, the amount of plastic waste has increased immensely in the environment. While the main concern has been orientated toward visible litter, more recently fragments of plastic less than 5 mm in diameter, called microplastic particles (MP), raised the attention due to their ability to induce toxic effects in organisms. The toxicity of MP increases with a decrease in size since smaller sized particles are absorbed systematically and accumulated in different organs/tissues, including brain.

Aim: Present study is designed to compare possible toxic acute effects of different sized MP, originating from polyethylene-terephthalate bottles, on toxicity signs, sensory-motor functions and relative brain weight in young male Wistar rats.

Methods: Rats (n = 24) were divided in four experimental groups: (I) intact (controls); Q that orally received a 2.5 ml of Milli-Q; P1/P2 that were respectively orally administrated with 35 mg/kg of MP in median diameter of either 40 or 70 μm dissolved in a 2.5 ml of Milli-Q. 24 h after treatments, using toxicity clinical test, we assessed the agitation, convulsion, piloerection, sleepiness and lethargy. Parameters were valued as: – (no effect), + (mild effect), ++ (moderate effect) and +++ (major effect). Then, we evaluated sensory-motor functions by monitoring: consciousness (scored 0/1 point), respiration (scored 0/1), spontaneous activity (scored 0/1/2/3), forepaw outstretching (scored 0/1/2), climbing (scored 0/1), visual placing (scored 0/1), cage grasp (scored 0/1), gait posture (scored 0/1/2), geotaxis (scored 0/1), hearing (scored 0/1) and pacing/circling (scored 0/1). Total score was expressed as the sum of average scores of all investigated parameters and graded on the scale from 0 to 15. Then, rats were weighed and sacrificed, while their brains were carefully removed and weighed. The relative brain weights were calculated as the ratio of brain (wet tissue, mg) weight to body weight (g). For toxicity clinical testing a descriptive analysis was used while other data were analysed by One-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey’s posthoc test. Results were considered significant at p < 0.05.
Results: Clinical toxicity signs were similar between groups while results of sensory-motor test point to unaltered sensory-motor functions upon MP treatments compared to controls (F (3, 20) = 0.9538; P = 0.4336). The absence of changes might be attributed to acute treatment, brief evaluation period and lack of cumulative effect upon MP treatments. Nonetheless, only smaller sized MP led to an increase in relative brain weight compared to controls (F (3, 20) = 3.425; P = 0.0369; p < 0.05) which might indicate the capability of smaller sized MP to cross blood-brain barrier and be accumulated in the brain inducing oxidative stress and inflammatory response. Although larger sized MP did not cause changes in relative brain weight, the possible modulations of additional parameters that were not the focus of this study should not be omitted.
Conclusion: According to the presented results, even a smaller sized MP applied in a single dose could be harmful to health, thus, greater control of plastic usage and disposal is essential for humanity.

AB - In the brain, three isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) regulate production of nitric oxide (NO), a signalling molecule with a role in cerebral blood flow regulation. Depending on the stimulus, NO exerts dual nature, from neuroprotective to neurodestructive. Given the scarcity of literature data on the involvement of nitrosative stress indicators in the rat hippocampal response to 7-day lasting progesterone (P4) treatment following permanent occlusion of both common carotid arteries, we assessed NO level and protein expressions of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS, including its total (t-eNOS) and phosphorylated at Ser1177 isoform (p-eNOS Ser1177)). According to obtained results, elevated NO levels occurred due to activity of other NOS forms since eNOS expressions were similar between experimental groups. Although NO level was downscaled it was still elevated in occluded animals treated with P4, showing modest anti-nitrosative effect of this potent steroid in the hippocampus.

AB - Immobilizing antifungal polyenes such as nystatin (Nys) and amphotericin B (AmB) into biodegradable formulations is advantageous compared to free drug administration providing sustained release, reduced dosing due to localized targeting and overall reduced systemic drug toxicity. In this study, we encapsulated Nys and AmB in medium chain length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHA) microspheres (7–8 µm in diameter). The obtained formulations have been validated for antifungal activity in vitro against a panel of pathogenic fungi including species of Candida, Aspergillus, Microsporum and Trichophyton genera and toxicity and efficacy in vivo using the zebrafish model of disseminated candidiasis. While free polyenes, especially AmB, were highly toxic to zebrafish embryos at the effective (MIC) doses, after their loading into mcl-PHA microspheres, inner organ toxicity and teratogenicity associated with both drugs were not observed, even at 100 × MIC doses. The obtained mcl-PHA/polyene formulations have successfully eradicated C. albicans infection and showed an improved therapeutic profile in zebrafish by enhancing infected embryos survival. This approach is contributing to the antifungal arsenal as polyenes, although the first broad-spectrum antifungals on the market are still the gold standard for treatment of fungal infections.

AB - In the past decade, scientists have made an outstanding progress in machine learning techniques, based on natural language processing, that takes advantage of vast number of material science documents to gain novel aspects on materials synthesis. Herein, we are comparing hydrothermal synthesis recipes for obtaining metal oxide nanomaterials carried out in our laboratory with learned synthesis recipes in terms of precursors, processing parameters, steps and product characteristics. As a starting point, open source tools and pre-trained models are used to get optimal hydrothermal synthesis recepies for desired material. This new approach is showing a great potential to become a standard method in planning viable synthesis routes for new materials.

AB - Worldwide pollution with plastic debris represents tremendous environmental issue. Small particles originated from plastic bottles exert various effects in organisms when exposed chronically, while the effects of a single exposure are completely unknown. Thus, to test their potential health impact, male Wistar rats were exposed by oral gavage to a single dose of microplastic particles (MP) derived from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles (1.4, 35 or 125 mg/kg with median diameter of 85 μm). Food and water intakes were monitored, and neurological and clinical tests were conducted. Obtained results point to lower food and water intakes in groups that received two higher MP doses indicating to interference with normal digestion. None of three used MP doses provoked neurological and clinical impairments either due to short-term exposure and/or lack of MP cumulative effect. Overall, presented results indicate that exposure to a single dose of MP can initiate health issues.

AB - Flaxseed oil, extracted from ripened flaxseeds, is functional food source that is associated with health benefits in many diseases, including cardiovascular,
cancer, osteoporosis, etc. Besides saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids, it also contains easily oxidized polyunsaturated fatty acids of the n-3 family. In current study, we tested the effects of commercial flaxseed oil in rat liver by measuring parameters related to free radical challenge (pro/antioxidant balance (PAB), lipid peroxidation (LPO) products and glutathione (GSH) level). Overall, applied treatment maintains general prooxidant load and antioxidant capacity since the level of PAB was unchanged. However, it exerts significant modulatory effect on particular redox parameters by increasing the amount of LPO products and consequently the susceptibility of tissue to free radical oxidative damage, which challenges the antioxidant defence system that
in return elevates GSH concentration.

AB - D-galactose (d-gal) is an important physiological nutrient. According to the
widely accepted aging metabolic theory d-gal at high levels can be converted
into aldose and hydroperoxide, resulting in the overproduction of reactive
oxygen species (ROS). Increased ROS levels may subsequently cause oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and apoptosis which are hallmarks of natural senescence as well as various pathological conditions. We investigated the effects of chronic oral d-gal intake (200 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg for 6 weeks) on physiological, neurological and toxicity parameters in 3 months old male Wistar rats. The obtained results indicate that body weight, food intake, serum glucose, neurological and toxicity status remained unaffected while urine proteins were significantly increased in d-gal treated rats. Although there was no effect on the general health status of the animals, our findings suggest that chronic oral d-gal administration may lead to renal dysfunction.

AB - Increased plastic usage creates environmental problems due to its accumulation and degradation into microplastic particles (MP), less than 5 mm in diameter. Particles from various sources like food and beverages contaminated with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) could accumulate in different tissues exerting adverse effects. Since data regarding potential acute toxicity in doses that represent realistic/daily ingested MP doses are entirely lacking, male Wistar rats were exposed to a single dose (1.4, 35 or 125 mg/kg) of PET-generated MP by oral gavage. Changes in wet organ weight to body weight ratio of testicles, adrenal glands and kidneys were examined 24 h following the treatment. Results point to increased organ/body weight ratio of testicles in rats exposed to two higher MP doses, while adrenal glands were augmented only after treatment with 125 mg/kg. Further research is needed to gain insight into the underlying mechanisms of the observed phenomenon.

AB - Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are specific form of this element that has recently become the subject of numerous research, especially in the field of biomedicine. Several synthesis procedures for obtaining SeNPs have been developed so far, among those including reduction of selenium salts are the most frequently used. In this work, it is examined the effect of two stabilizing agents on morphology, size, and crystallinity of obtained SeNPs. For this purpose, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and polyglutamic acid (PGA) were used as stabilizing agents while reduction of sodium selenite with ascorbic acid was elected as a synthesis procedure. Based on the results obtained from scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and measurements of zeta potential, it was determined that the mechanism of stabilization i.e. choice of stabilizing agent can promote different crystalline arrangement within SeNPs. The BSA proved as a more effective stabilizing agent for SeNPs, as it provides obtaining the smaller, more uniform, and amorphous nanoparticles.

AB - Radar-absorbent materials, used in stealth technology for defense aircrafts, vehicles, satellites, etc. from radar detection, are commonly based on graphite or semiconductive particles embedded in a polymer matrix. In this study, we employed Co2+ ion-substitution to improve Vis-NIR reflectivity of hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, HAP) powder. HAP:Co with nominally 5 at.% of Co was prepared with hydrothermal processing of a precipitate. Synthesized powder was characterized by XRD, Raman and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, FE-SEM and TEM. Thermal stability of HAP:Co powder was examined by simultaneous TG-DTA analyzer. To modify its optical properties and obtain powders with a varietty of color tone, the HAP:Co powder was calcined at 800, 1000, and 1100 °C, in an air atmosphere, for 1 hour. Afterward, the calcined particles were used to prepare composites with poly(vinyl butyral), (PVB); the concentration range was 1 wt.% of the HAP:Co in PVB. The composite coatings, in the form of thin films on glass, were prepared by the solvent-casting technique, using ethanol as a fast evaporating solvent. Firstly, the HAP:Co particles were dispersed in ethanol, then PVB was added (Mowital B30H) and dissolved. To evaporate the solvent before spectrophotometric measurements, the coatings on glass were dried at room temperature for 72 hours. To comprehend optical properties of the coatings, diffuse reflection, transmission, and color coordinates were determined. We found that calcined HAP:Co particles have potential to be used in the formulation of coatings for camouflage protection.

AB - Taking advantage of the flexibility of the apatite structure, nano- and micro-particles of hydroxyapatite (HAp) were doped with different combinations of rare earth ions (RE3+ = Gd, Eu, Yb, Tm) to achieve a synergy among their magnetic and optical properties and to enable their application in preventive medicine, particularly diagnostics based on multimodal imaging. All powders were synthesized through hydrothermal processing at T ≤ 200 °C. An X-ray powder diffraction analysis showed that all powders crystallized in P63/m space group of the hexagonal crystal structure. The refined unit-cell parameters reflected a decrease in the unit cell volume as a result of the partial substitution of Ca2+ with smaller RE3+ ions at both cation positions. The FTIR analysis additionally suggested that a synergy may exist solely in the triply doped system, where the lattice symmetry and vibration modes become more coherent than in the singly or doubly doped systems. HAp:RE3+ optical characterization revealed a change in the energy band gap and the appearance of a weak blue luminescence (λex = 370 nm) due to an increased concentration of defects. The “up”- and the “down”-conversion spectra of HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm and HAp:Gd/Eu powders showed characteristic transitions of Tm3+ and Eu3+, respectively. Furthermore, in contrast to diamagnetic HAp, all HAp:RE3+ powders exhibited paramagnetic behavior. Cell viability tests of HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm and HAp:Gd/Eu powders in human dental pulp stem cell cultures indicated their good biocompatibility.

AB - Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has been widely used as bone reconstruction materials due to their similarity to bone tissue. The improvement of HAp properties was achieved by doping its crystal lattice with different ions. Lanthanides, i.e. Rare Earth Elements (RE) are also suitable for doping HAp. The aim of the presented research was to investigate the possibility of creating lumino-magnetic particles of HAp doped with gadolinium (Gd3+) ions and co-doped with ytterbium/thulium (Yb3+/Tm3+) or europium (Eu3+) ions for potential use in multimodal imaging (MI). Pure HAp (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)), magnetic HAp:Gd (Ca4.85Gd0.15(PO4)3(OH)), and lumino-magnetic HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm (Ca4.85Gd0.03Yb0.1Tm0.02(PO4)3(OH)) and HAp:Gd/Eu (Ca4.94Gd0.02Eu0.04(PO4)3(OH)) particles were synthesized using emulsification process and hydrothermal processing. All synthesized particles had an elongated shape and exhibited a paramagnetic behavior. Reduction of the unit cell volume as a result of replacement of Ca2+ ions by ions with a smaller ionic radius (Gd3+, Yb3+, Tm3+, Eu3+) confirmed by using XRD and Rietveld refined plots. The energy band gap values of the synthesized samples range from 4.93 to 3.18 eV and decrease in the following order: HAp:Gd >HAp>HAp:Gd/Eu>HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm. The results of photoluminescence emission spectra of HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm and HAp:Gd/Eu particles showed characteristic transitions of Tm3+ and Eu3+, respectively.

AB - Lantanide dual-doped hydroxyapatite (HaP:Ln) is currently the subject of numerous studies in reconstructive medicine. Designed in form of hybrid nanoparticles which have magnetic and luminescent properties HaP:Ln (where Ln=Gd/Eu or Gd/Yb/Tm) is capable to enhance signal detection. Beside it, due biodegradable properties it is suitable for use in bone tissue engineering and target drug delivery. For such a promising approach, doping of a HAp matrix is performed with Gd/Eu and Gd/Yb/Tm during hydrothermal synthesis using EDTA as chelating agent. Morphological and structural characteristics of the particles were obtained using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and photoluminescence (PL). The results show that needle-like nano- or micro- particles were obtained in all systems. Their phase composition and uniform distribution of dopants were confirmed by the structural refinement of the XRPD data and luminescence response from Eu and Tb (λex = 370, 394 and 977 nm).

AB - A facile decarbonylation reaction of a variety of aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes using maghemite-supported palladium catalyst has been developed. The magnetic properties of catalyst facilitated an easy and efficient recovery of the catalyst from the reaction mixture using an external magnet. It was found that the catalyst could be reused up to four consecutive catalytic runs without a significant change in activity. In addition, the catalyst was also very effective in the dehalogenation of aryl halides. This is the first report on efficient utilization of directly immobilized Pd on maghemite in decarbonylation and dehalogenation reactions. © Georg Thieme Verlag Stuttgart.New York.
