abstract = "Ирена Грицкат рођена је 1922. године y Београду. Године 1940. завршила
је гимназију, a 1949.
2010 [50])., This paper firstly presents the biography of Academician Irena Grickat-Radulović.
It is followed by three separate sections: the first section deals with her lexicographic
work, the second one deals with her semantic theories and analyses, and the third one
deals with her diachronic investigations.
Irena Grickat began her lexicographic work on the Dictionary of the Serbo-Croatian
Literary and Vernacular Language of the SASA in 1949, as an inquisitive associate who
attended meetings in which the basic-level entries were being examined and verified,
in which lexicographic procedures were established by the committee and answers
sought to various grammatical and semantic questions that would arise in the course
of compiling the dictionary. Naturally, there was still a lot of wandering in search of
the right course concerning both the lexicographic procedures and the said manifold
questions. And it is precisely this search that stimulated Irena Grickat to approach
this work with the aspiration to discover in language that which cannot be outwardly
perceived, to uncover the unobservable immanent linguistic processes. With reference
to that, much later, she said: “what I find most compelling in the comprehensive treatment
of the lexicon of a language is its intellectual dimension, which requires not only being
adept at defining a word, but also being able to discern the logic behind ordering the
definitions, discovering layers between the basic and less frequent meanings, ranging
from the literal meaning, or common extended meanings, towards less common
ones, and ending with the idiosyncratic figurative ‘excursion’.” Soon afterwards, this
inquisitive associate turned into one whose knowledge and lexicographic expertise far
exceeded that which was expected for her age and the official post she held, and thus
she went on to become the most prominent lexicographer, the one who prepared the
Guidelines for the compilation of the dictionary, who passed her knowledge generously
onto others, who established and justified with scientific argumentation a number of
particular lexicographic procedures and lexicographic types of treatment, who laid the
foundations for a modern lexicography based on current scientific knowledge, and who
thereby formed the Belgrade school of lexicography.
Irena Grickat left a deep mark in the investigations of semantic issues. Her research
findings on the semantics of verbs have not been surpassed to this day, particularly
those concerning verbal aspect, prefixation and verbal diminutives, semantics of
adverbs, as well as case semantics. She is known to have been drawing motivation for
her scientific investigations from her lexicographic work.
As a historian of the Serbian language Irena Grickat greatly indebted Serbian
linguistics. Dealing with the issues in the historical development of vernacular and
different types of literary language alike, she successfully resolved many issues in
diachronic lexicology, syntax and stylistics. Moreover, she raised on a new basis, distinct
from Belić’s paradigm, the key issues of the date and place of origin of the Serbian
recension of Church Slavonic. Her works today represent indispensable references in
the study of the historical development of the Serbian language from its origin up until
the period of Vuk’s language reform",
