The book „Time of/without death. Notions of death in Serbia in XIX-XX centuries“ is an attempt to study and interpret local specificities in comprehending the phenomenon of death in a comprehensive yet compressed manner, but also in the manner in which global civilization-related changes were reflected through them. Even though timelines for individual topics treated in the book range from the period of early Christianity and Middle Ages via modern times to the contemporary period, the primary aim of the research was not to present historic development of ideas relating to the phenomenon of death. The course of development of these ideas was used to explain the present moment, i. e. attitudes and practices observed in Serbian society at the end of XX and beginning of XXI century. The very title of the book originated from the observation that the generally accepted attitude towards the modern society, as the one characterized by suppressing of thinking, speaking, and ideas of death to ...the margins of reality is opposed by the same reality in which images of death increasingly multiply. Regardless of whether it is about expansion of different forms of collective memory culture, funerals of public figures covered by media and attended by masses, or brutal coverage showing victims of traffic accidents and natural disasters, various images of death flood the public space of our daily lives. On the other hand, as observed by the now classical authors from the area of tanathoanthropology, common people and their common deaths take place in solitary silence, in the space and time separated and isolated from the rest of the world. One of the reasons to compose this study was the need to answer to at least a number of the issues stemming out of this complex topic. How is the idea of death conceived on collective versus individual level? To which extent do modern perceptions and practices relating to this inevitability of life relate to traditional beliefs and ritual forms, and to what extent were the latter subjected to changes in contemporary living conditions? How the idea of death is developed using religious versus ideological forms, and what is their relationship in secular/sacral contexts? Does secular context imply atheistic interpretation of this phenomenon? Why has tanathological rhetoric turned out to be very handy in creating a large number of political rituals over the course of the last 20 years (but throughout the history of civilization as well)? Could the text we get by interpreting the phenomenon of death be helpful to us in understanding other spheres of cultural reality as well, and how? And, would a positive answer to this question confirm the understanding of the phenomenon of death as the source of overall culture?
