Presented in the thesis is a review of phonetic, accentological and morphological features of ikavian-šćakavian speech in southwestern Bosnia. Some outtanding
syntactic characteristics of this speech are also pointed at. Examined is the ikavian
speech of the inhabitants of communities of Tomislavgrad and Livno, i.e. the territories of Duvanjsko Polje and upper Livanjsko Polje. In this area the majority of populationa are Croats — 54.000 inhabitants, while there are some 9.000 Muslims and
3.300 Serbs. The ethnical situation has changed drastically after the recent war. The
outstanding phonetic features of this speech are the ikavian change ofjat (lip, bilo),
standard articulation of vowels, with sporadic, optional diphthongisation of medium
vowels -e- and -о- (šest, mидre), as far as consonants are concerned, it is the occurrence of groups-šć-, -žđ- (šćaр, zvižda), the change -jt- - -ć-, -ja- - -d- in verbs like
doći, and, in the category of new jodization, characteristic forms o...n nouns in -ijakand
ajdectives with morpheme -iji (rôdijak, teletiji), formally unmotivated. This speech
has new accentuation of younger štokavian vernaculars. Phonological function is
performed by tone, quantity and the place of accent. Morphological characteristics
mark this speech significantly. In the category of declination, outstanding cases are
Dative, Instrumental and Locative plural. Although equalized, they are distinguished
by a number ofendings, old and new, which is the result of weakening of interparadigmatic distinctions, as well as reduplication and intercrossing. This brings these
vernaculars close to Dalmatian ones, while long-a- in Genitive pluralis, interalia, an
indicator of their development in the trends of the youngest štokavian vernaculars.
